Welcome to Week 6
We are now on the downhill run to the end of Term 4! Where has the time gone? As we continue to push through the busy period of the term, where extra pressure is placed on our teachers, students and families, it is important to remember to make well-being a priority. Please never hesitate to contact your classroom teacher if your child needs any additional support during this time.
Hats and Sunscreen
As we are experiencing hotter weather, it is critical that all students are wearing hats and sunscreen. Any students not wearing hats will be asked to play in the shaded area of the playground. Over the past two weeks there have been an increasing number of students not wearing hats while playing at recess and lunchtimes.
Sunscreen is available for all students to apply before any break. Students are welcome to bring their own smaller tubes of sunscreen if they wish.
Before School Drop off
Just a reminder that before school drop off begins at 8:20. There have been an increasing number of students arriving at the school before this time, being unsupervised. It is for children’s safety that we do not want students out the front of the school before this time. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding this matter. Before School Care is available with the YMCA.
Lions Club Book Donations
Thank you to the Lions Club of Canberra Belconnen for donating new books to our school library. Sadly members from the Lion’s club have been unable to come and present these in person at a school assembly, but we are extremely grateful for their continued support of our wonderful school.
Kinder Orientation
Next Wednesday we will be welcoming our new Kindergarten students for 2021! These students will have an action packed morning at St Michael’s and meet their Year 6 buddies for next year. We are very lucky to have a Year 5 cohort that is very ready to accept the challenge of being the student leaders for St Michael’s in 2021.
We are very excited to have the new visitors come and join us on Wednesday and we will ensure that they feel welcomed into our lovely school!
Fee Structure for 2021
The fee structure for 2021 has come home today and is also available on our website. If you pay by direct debit you will need to increase your debit for 2021, please see Lisa in the Front Office for a new form and for any assistance.
Once again, please do not hesitate to get in contact if you need anything.
Kind regards,
Damien Webb - Principal (Acting)
Religious Education Curriculum
In 5/6 Religion this term we have been looking at the symbols and various representations of Pentecost. Students were asked to compare a variety of artworks and the ways in which they show the coming of the Holy Spirit. The children were very engaged in discussions around the symbols of wind and fire and how the disciples and Mary were represented in both modern and ancient depictions.
During morning prayer the students have been engaged in self-reflective and meditation periods. This has focused on checking in on themselves and the ways in which they can support each other and the school community during Term 4.

Giving Mass
On Tuesday 8/12 we will be celebrating a Whole School Mass with our students. Due to Covid restrictions we will be holding the Mass in our school hall. Unfortunately we are unable to invite parents but we are looking forward to celebrating Mass with all our students gathering and our 3/4 students leading. At this Mass our school will donate all non-perishable food items and unwrapped gifts to the St Vincent de Paul Christmas appeal. We are very grateful for the donations that families have generously donated so far and we request that they keep coming in to your child’s classroom.
St Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal
This year, Christmas will be like no other. After the year that no one saw coming, many families are without jobs and are under increased financial stress, some for the first time in their lives. With more families facing uncertainty, no one knows what to expect for Christmas Day.
Vinnies is committed to making Christmas a time to renew hope. But we need YOUR help.
Our school community can play an important part in renewing hope for the thousands of people who face an uncertain Christmas. Together, we can continue to bring Christmas gifts, Christmas hampers and smiles of love and laughter to the people who need it most this season.
From everyone at Vinnies, the staff of St Michael’s and the people we assist, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Please give all food items and gifts to your child’s class teacher to collect by December 8th 2020. THANK YOU!
CHRISTMAS HAMPERS
Hampers are received by individuals and families in your local community who have been recently visited by conference volunteers from the St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn. Our Christmas Hamper shopping list is a suggestion only. A few things to keep in mind:
- To uphold the dignity of those receiving the goods, please ensure that all food items are not due to expire for 6 months. All items must be nonperishable.
- If you would like to donate perishable food items such as chocolates or ham it is best to do so by donating a gift voucher so that families can select what they would like during the holidays.
CHRISTMAS GIFTS
Christmas gifts are given to a range of individuals and families and can include children we support in our Youth programs, families being supported by Special Works or by local conferences. By giving a gift to the Society, we are able to help others regain hope and bring joy to them at Christmas. Please note:
- We can only gift new items still in packaging.
- We also request that gifts are not wrapped as we try our best to match presents with the individual. If you would like, you can donate wrapping paper and/or gift bags along with your gift so they can be wrapped at a later date.
Amen.

Book Fair
Thank you to all our families that supported our recent Book Fair. From the commision that we received, we were able to purchase these new books for our library. They will be available for the beginning of the school year.
Overdue notices came home with students last week. If families could all take a few minutes to round up any library books and return these as soon as possible, your assistance is appreciated. From time to time a title will remain on a student's borrowing record after it has been returned. If there is a book on your overdue notice that has been returned, please just return the slip with a note indicating the book has already been returned. We can then update the records.
End of Year Library Dates
As we approach the end of the year, we start planning for our library stocktake to take place. While library lessons will continue to take place until the end of term, last week was the last week of student borrowing. In order for the stocktake to take place, we ask that all library books be returned by the end of Week 7, Friday 27th November. Books can be returned at anytime, there is no need to wait until your child's library day. Stocktake will commence in Week 8.
Special wishes to those children who celebrate their birthday this week:
Sienna 5/6F, Charlize 3/4F, Sophie 5/6K, Oliver 3/4A and Phillip 5/6F
We hope you have a great day!!
Congratulations to the following students who achieved a Harmony Award in Week 6. Awards will be presented at Friday morning's assembly (weather permitting).
Well done!!
