Dear Parents and Carers,
There was huge excitement on Friday as we installed our new bubbler and re-fill water station!
The design is called Connection and Harmony and is created by Luke Penrith a Sydney based Aboriginal artist. This artwork captures where freshwater rivers meet the salty sea. This symbolises the interconnectedness of life and the vital role water plays in our communities.
The word Kaleen from the language of the Wiradjuri cultural group, is translated in English to mean ‘water’
The connection to water and harmony is special to St Michael’s as our vision is to live in harmony with each other and with creation.
Confirmation Congratulations
Congratulations to our Students preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation for a wonderful and prayerful Retreat Day. Thank you so much to Father Mick, Erika Tokich and the Parish Team for the organisation of a huge event. There are photos and updates later in the newsletter.
Other school happenings
I commend to you the Sharing our Learning afternoon- Wednesday 25 September 3:30-5:30pm. This is an opportunity I am proud to have initiated with our staff at St Michael’s. It is an informal opportunity for families to share student learning and enjoy some positive time together at school. This year we will have students demonstrating the filming studio in our Library Hub with afternoon tea. We were able to fund resources for this hub by securing a grant from the ACT Education Directorate’s Non-Government School Parent Engagement Grants Program. Thank you to our ICT leaders who will be part of this sharing.
Other exciting events this term include St Michael’s Feast Day- Friday 27 September.
The privilege of wearing non-uniform this day is to donate a raffle item for our St Michael’s Christmas, Friday 6 December. Please see event reminders appearing on Facebook and via Compass for further details.
Congratulations to our STEM team who have been working and preparing with Jess Hallahan for a Robocup event at Carolyn Chisholm High School on Saturday 14 September. Thanks to Jess for her leadership in this space and to the families and students who are very excited for the event. We hope you have a wonderful day.
Congratulations also to our 3 students who gave their best at the recent Belconnen Athletics Carnival and received ribbons at Assembly last week. Mahli, Olivia and Nicole were a credit to themselves and to St Michael’s achieving wonderful results, great effort girls!
Thanks to our staff and parents who support our students attending these events. We are grateful for your support.
Staffing news
In weeks 9 and 10, I will be accessing some planned long service leave. In my absence, I have full confidence in the capable and experienced Principal leadership of Bridgette McCann. Supporting Bridgette will be Erika Tokich in the role of Assistant Principal (AP) and Emily O’Rourke in the position of Religious Education Coordinator. (REC) Currently Danielle Madsen and Victoria De Mattia are also on leave. We are indeed fortunate at St Michael’s to have quality relief teachers such as Ellen Fletcher and Connor Howland to support teacher’s leave. This ensures there are minimal impacts to classes with consistent and quality learning a priority.
I am proud to lead such a great community where we are not only achieving excellent results in academic learning but offering many experiences across curriculum areas for your children.
We have worked together to build a positive culture at St Michael’s where students feel safe and valued. Thank you to everyone who upholds our vision- to live and learn in harmony, inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus.
Many blessings,
Judy Egan

Community Council Corner
The community council met for their last meeting of term three and there was so much great news to share. The school has had a wonderful write up in the Riot Act, sharing the beautiful work the school is doing with Catalyst and the students. Excellent feedback has been received about Science week, the Book fair, the Father’s Day stall and Liturgy. Well done to Mrs McKeough has been nominated for a Teacher Quality Institute (TQI) award.
There are teams of talented students attending both the Boorowa netball and touch football tournament and the Robocup STEM competition. A new bubbler and some bark chip has been ordered for the playground, as well as routine safety tree maintenance planned to be done. There may be a working bee toward the middle of November. Which means the playground will look lovely for the St Michael’s Christmas. Planning is underway for the community to come together and celebrate the close of the year, with a sausage sizzle, carols, stalls and live performances from the classes. More details to come.
As always if you have any feedback or would like to get in contact with the Community Council, please reach out!

Year 6 Retreat Day
Last Thursday the Year 6 students participated in a Retreat Day with St Monica’s students and Confirmation candidates from the School of Religion. The day was planned to come together as a Parish community and learn more about the Holy Spirit. The morning’s activities were about getting to know each other and having fun. In the afternoon the students were given time to reflect on their spiritual gifts and how they will use them in their lives. We were also joined by Fr Mick and Archbishop Christopher Prowse who spoke to the students about Jesus’ great love for each of them and the invitation to follow Jesus’ example, living a life of love and service. The day concluded with the students presenting their artworks with their spiritual gifts. Thank you to the Year 6 cohort for the way they participated with enthusiasm and reverence and to our Year 6 teachers, Ms Shianne Sahariv and Mrs Danielle Madsen for their support of the day.
St Michael’s Feast Day
The Feast Day of St Michael is the 29th of September and we will celebrate with a whole school liturgy on the last day of term, Friday the 27th of September. All families are most welcome to join us for the liturgy at 9:15am in the church. Following the liturgy, students will be participating in activities to enrich their understanding of St Michael our Archangel who protects us. In lieu of wearing their uniform, the students are asked to bring in donations to assist with our Christmas Raffles. Donations are as follows:
Kindergarten - Gardening items e.g. gloves
Year One/Two - Pampering products e.g bath bombs
Year Three/Four - Art and Craft items for kids e.g. coloured pencils
Year Five/Six - Sporting items for kids e.g. hand balls
Thank you in advance for your generous donations.
OLPH Youth Group
All Year 5 and 6 students are invited to join a new ‘Saints in Training’ OLPH Youth Group. The group is based on 'Food, Faith and Fun' and is inclusive of all religions. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to make connections within our parish. The next meeting is this Friday the 13th of September at St Monica’s Parish Hall Evatt 6:30pm - 8pm. The cost is $5 per family which includes a meal, snack, and drinks. Attached is the ‘Who Needs To Know?” OLPH Update which has information from the first session as well as information about the Youth Coordinators who conduct the sessions. If you would like to join the mailing list, please email - youth.northbelconnen@cg.org.au

We have been enjoying learning and practising the concepts of G.E.M through the Resilience Project.
Here are some 5/6 student reflections on the program so far:
“I have really enjoyed learning about this because it is really helping me learn how to control my emotions and my behaviour. For example, sometimes at school I practice think before you speak. Miss Sahariv has taught us all the good things about G.E.M and how it will make us better people now and in the future. When I am doing the Resilience Project, I reflect on the good things about my day to look back and see what I’ve been doing. I really enjoy the drawing part of it.” – Allegra, 5/6I
“I have enjoyed learning about ways to control my emotions and how to show empathy. I also learnt about the chemicals leading to emotions.” – Alexander, 5/6I
If you have accessed the Resilience Project Parent Hub or have implemented G.E.M at home; please let us know as we would like some parent/family testimonies on the program.

Overdue Library Books
We would greatly appreciate any overdue library books being returned to school as soon as possible. Thank you for your support with this as it means the books are available to others to borrow.
CSPA Parent Survey on Student Wellbeing and Learning
Catholic School Parents Australia (CSPA) are collaborating with the University of New England (UNE) to conduct a national study on student wellbeing and learning.
They are aiming to collect evidence through a survey from a broad sample of parents and carers of children attending Catholic schools in Australia.
The survey will be open until the end of October. Results will be used to report to the Federal Government and Catholic Education.
Parents and carers are encouraged to participate in the survey.
Being a parent or carer can be difficult at times, we are aware there is a lot on family’s plates.
We tend to invest a lot of time and love into our little people, but often we forget to invest in ourselves too.
Marymead CatholicCare is a not-for-profit organisation servicing the ACT and surrounding areas. They provide resources to support students and their families, including an array of programs and services such as counselling, mental health support, social groups and therapies.
