Dear Parents and Carers,
Congratulations to all our students who received their First Holy Communion on the weekend and sincere thanks to families and all those who prepared and assisted them.
It was wonderful witnessing how well prepared these students were. I sincerely thank Fr. Mick for the way he so beautifully attended to the parents and students assisting them to understand and appreciate the grace and symbolism of the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

Important NAPLAN updates
ACARA (Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority) has released information that NAPLAN reports for 2023 will be based on Proficiency Standards instead of the previous Band Levels. Education Ministers agreed on the changes and the change of assessment time to take place in March each year. Proficiency Standards were developed by panels of teaching experts, with feedback from national parenting bodies. The reason for the change was to provide simpler, clearer, and more helpful information for parents and carers at a glance. It is also important to realise that 2023 NAPLAN results cannot be compared to previous results as a new measurement scale was developed for the online component. NAPLAN is only one measure of student performance, while we value the data, we also gather assessment data in many other important ways, e.g., anecdotally, teacher observations notes, student workbooks/ whiteboards, checking for understanding, student speeches, reading journals etc. Please read the information attached which provides more details and visit the website. https://www.acara.edu.au/ . We expect NAPLAN reports to arrive mid-July.

Parish Sacramental Program 2023
Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on:
Tuesday 5 September 2023 at 6pm in St Michael’s Church, Kaleen;
Wednesday 6 September 2023 at 6pm in St Monica’s Church, Evatt; and
Thursday 7 September 2023 at 6pm in St Monica’s Church, Evatt.
Important - please talk to your child and decide on the ‘Saint’s Name’ and their ‘Sponsor’, as these are requirements on the registration form.
The sponsor should be an adult baptised catholic and not a parent. The role of the sponsor should be someone who has an influence in the child’s life and can fill in the gaps where the parent is unable to.
Registrations open on Monday 26 June and will close by Friday 21 July 2023.
Registration for the Sacrament must be made via the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Qkr! App (NOT the school app).
If you are registering more than 1 child you will need to fully complete and pay for each separate registration.
No late registrations will be accepted after the closing date.
Sacrament of Reconciliation will be celebrated in term 1, 2024.
For further Information – please contact the Sacramental Program Coordinator at sc.belconnennorth@cg.org.au or check the parish website at www.cg.org.au/belconnennorth

Eucharist
On Sunday, St Michael’s students received the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first time. During mass, we heard Matthew’s Gospel about Jesus sending out the apostles to continue His mission. Our Eucharist candidates have also accepted the challenge of continuing Jesus’ work; being apostles of Jesus. By receiving Jesus in the Eucharist, they are committing to follow in His footsteps being Eucharistic people. We congratulate Annika, Ned, Allegra, Thomas, Evie, Lucas, Dominic and Adeline.
Thank you to all involved in preparing the students including families, Mrs Blakey and Miss O’Rourke. A special thanks to Fr Mick who spent much time with the candidates during their preparation. We are very blessed to have a parish priest so dedicated to ensuring the students are aware of the importance of this event in their lives.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Feast Day
Mother Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, after which our parish is named, is known for miracles and answers to prayers. Next Tuesday the 27th of June, we will join with St Monica’s School to celebrate the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Feast Day as a Parish community. K-2 students will stay at St Michael’s and be joined by K-2 from St Monica’s. All 3-6 St Michael’s students will gather at St Monica’s.
Students at both schools will celebrate liturgy and participate in activities to deepen their knowledge of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. All parents are warmly invited to attend the liturgy at St Michael’s at 10:15am in the church.
A Compass message has been sent with all the details. Please ensure if you have a child in Years 3-6 that you consent permission online and pack fruit/recess in a disposable bag which is clearly labeled. The day will conclude around 1:15pm and students will have a normal lunch and afternoon session back in their classes. Please note that all students are to wear their full Sports Uniform on the day. We look forward to a wonderful day as a Parish community.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander News - Danielle Madsen
This week Katrina Cambridge, the Aboriginal Education Officer from CE, came to visit St Michael’s to lead an aboriginal artwork activity with a group of our students. The session focused on For Our Elders, which is the theme for NAIDOC Week (2 – 9 July). The students had the opportunity to reflect upon the importance of their elders, and they used Aboriginal symbols to draw images that told a story about the role their elders play in their life.
Digital Technology - Shannon Blakey
Students designed their own maze and are programming a Bee-Bot to travel along the track while keeping track of the code they have used to program the Bee-Bot with.
Sport & Library News - Erin Hardwicke
This year we are trialling a new program of events and using a different format for our timing and recording of results. We thank Corroboree Athletics for loaning us their equipment. We are hoping that the new format will improve the accruacy of the results and also allow us to run our events in a more time efficient way. All things going to plan, we hope to have the track events completed between 9:30-11am and welcome you to join us and cheer on your child. It will be difficult to provide more exact times of specific events and appreciate your patience as we trial the new structure.
Well done to all the students who have completed the challenge already. Remember to place your completed forms in the barrel in the library for your chance to win a prize. If you would like another form they are avalable in the library or can be found here https://www.education.act.gov.au/public-school-life/additional-programs/chief_ministers_reading_challenge/resources Keep up the great reading!!
Hello parents and carers,
I am currently running our St Michael’s Greenhouse this year. I am starting to look for volunteers who would be happy to help in any capacity, during school hours, after school hours or over the weekends/school holidays to help the Greenhouse flourish. If you are interested or know anyone that is interested, please email me: natasha.kapantais@cg.catholic.edu.au
I look forward to hearing from you and talking about what ideas, skills, or knowledge you have about the Greenhouse.
Many thanks,
Natasha Kapantais
