Dear Parents and Carers,
First Holy Communion
This weekend many of our Year 4 students will celebrate the Sacrament of Eucharist. As part of their preparation the students reflected on the scripture story, Feeding the Five Thousand. (Matt; 14:13-21) With only a few loaves and fish Jesus feeds thousands of people. The story tells us that Jesus is indeed the Messiah and with the little he has, through his faith in God, he performs a miraculous sign. Being open to the grace of Jesus, we too can be signs of love and hope in our community, it only takes small steps, and the willingness to choose to be kind. Congratulations to the children and their families and thank you to Father Loi and everyone involved in their preparation.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Feast Day Joint school celebrations
We are excited to be celebrating with our sister school St Monica’s Evatt, the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Friday 24 June. Permissions went out on Compass yesterday for our students in Years 3-6 to travel by bus to St Monica’s. We will be hosting the K-2 students from St Monica’s at St Michael’s. We will be having a liturgy at 10am in St Michael’s Church and all parents and carers are welcome to attend.
Parent/Teacher Interviews/ Assessment and Reporting
We will be using the Microsoft Bookings platform for Parent/Teacher Interviews, next Monday 20 June, Tuesday 21st June and Wednesday 22nd June. Once a booking is made the calendar reminder is automatically added as a TEAMS meeting. Teachers will assume that parents/carers are happy with a TEAMS non-contact meeting unless otherwise advised. We now operate in a space where face to face is welcomed, however for some families the ability to meet virtually is a more family friendly alternative. I know the teachers are happy to find the options that suit families, so please be in touch with your teacher if you would prefer a face-to-face meeting option. As mentioned in previous newsletters, this is an important opportunity to discuss how your child is learning including his/her strengths and challenges and interactions with others. The interview gives families a more rounded picture of how children are progressing as the reports provide only subject rankings. Mr Webb will be travelling to Galong for the Assistant Principals Retreat on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st June so he will arrange alternative interview days/times with 5/6H families.
Awards/ Updates
This Friday we will hand out our Harmony Awards in the Hall. Parents and carers are most welcome to come along. All students can wear Sports Uniform on Friday for the Athletics Carnival. Thank you to parents who have volunteered to assist at the Athletics Carnival, we will see how the wind blows regarding how many students we will take to the playing fields!
System Finances
Catholic Education is updating its Finance systems and we are asking that all families assist us with our record keeping by ensuring fees and payments are up to date. We understand that financial constraints can be overwhelming for families. Please contact me directly if you are having any issues or concerns around fees or any other school payments.
Thank you
I want to acknowledge that many in our community are unwell or continuing to grapple with ongoing symptoms of illness. My very best wishes to you all as we head into the winter season. May your hearts be warmed with the love of friends and family and occasionally if you’re lucky, a wonderful home-made soup! Many Blessings,
Active Streets for Schools Program
Have you noticed this logo on footpaths and shared paths in Canberra and wondered what it is?
The logo is part of the Active Streets for Schools program, which is a program to make the environment around schools safer to ride, walk, scooter or skate to and from school.
The logos will be around our school soon as part of the Active Streets program to promote walking and riding routes highlighted on our school map. The pavement stencils help to promote ‘part way’ drop off and collection points for families that live too far away to use active travel for the entire journey.
The logos also help to promote to the broader community that they are in the vicinity of the school and children are likely to be present.
As part of the program, educational resources have been distributed to certain year groups throughout the school to teach children about independent travel.
There are a number of benefits of children walking and riding to school, including safety in numbers, the health of the children, reduced congestion and less impact on the environment.
Congratulations to the following students who achieved a Harmony Award in Week 8. Awards will be handed out to students next Friday 17 June.
Well done!!

Religious Education
Students in 5/6 have been exploring how personal and spiritual transformation is activated through significant encounters and challenges. By the end of the term they will understand and be able to discuss:
- how faith is shared and strengthened in communities,
- that people choose how to respond to change,
- how the Holy Spirit is a power of transformation and present in the actions of people.
Students are learning about traditional saints like our own St Mary MacKillop of the Cross but also modern figures whom we may consider to have saint-like qualities like Greta Thunberg or Malala Yousafzai. This work will also support those students who will later prepare for Confirmation this year.
Religious Life of St Michael’s
First Communion
We keep in our prayers our First Communion candidates and their families as the children prepare to receive the precious Body and Blood of Jesus Christ this coming weekend. This weekend is particularly chosen as we celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi this week.

Feast of Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi is a festival that has been celebrated by many Christians, particularly the Catholic Church, in honour of the Eucharist since 1246. The name “Corpus Christi” is a Latin phrase that refers to the body of Christ. This event commemorates the Last Supper on the day before Jesus’ crucifixion, as described in the Bible. Corpus Christi is primarily celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church, but it is also included in the calendar of some Anglican churches.
Many Christians, especially those who belong to the Catholic denomination, receive Communion on this day. Some people, particularly children, receive their first Communion during Corpus Christi. This practice, also known as the Eucharist, involves people accepting consecrated bread and wine (or grape juice), which we believe are transformed into Jesus Christ’s body and blood.
Some churches have Corpus Christi processions and social gatherings after a church service. Thousands of people have participated in some of these processions in cities such as Sydney in recent times. Special guests are often invited to attend these processions, which usually feature music from choirs and bands. Corpus Christi usually falls on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday although some churches may celebrate it on the Sunday after Trinity Sunday.
Friday’s Athletics Carnival
Friday’s carnival will be going ahead! We are very excited! We will keep crossing our fingers and toes for good weather.
Students who are 8-12 years, and wish to compete in track events, will walk to the ovals shortly after 9 am.
At 11:30 am, we will be joined by our 5, 6, and 7 year olds to compete in their events (this will be dependent upon the weather).
We ask that all students come to school in their school sports uniform, and are encouraged to wear the colour of their sport house. Please see Facebook on Thursday for the finalised schedule of events. We hope to have completed our official events by 11 am, and the younger students races by 12 pm. We highly appreciate your understanding that these times and schedule of events may need to be adjusted on the day.
Could parent volunteers, please confirm their availability with Erin Hardwicke prior to Friday. We thank you again for your generous support!
